Afghanistan (AFG) vs West Indies (WI) Highlights, ICC World Cup 2019: West Indies won by a narrow margin of 23 runs exacting a sweet revenge on opponents Afghanistan - a side which has had the wood on them in recent times. The departure of Asghar Afghan and Rashid Khan almost but sealed a win for West Indies as they successfully defended their total of 311 in Leeds. For Afghanistan, Ikram Ali Khil top-scored with 86 and Rahmat Shah made 62 to keep their team in hunt of the target. But the duo's departure within the same over triggered a slide which only ended with a defeat for the Asian team.

AFG vs WI Live: WI win by 23 runs!

A great flying catch by Fabian Allen ends the AFG innings off the last ball as AFG are all-out for 288. An entertaining cameo from Shirzad in the end as he cleared the boundary a few times with ease but the amount of runs required proved too many for the tailenders. WI sign off with a victory but sadly for AFG they bow out of the WC without a single victory in their bag.

AFG vs WI Live: WICKET!

And Afghanistan have now lost their ex-captain and possibly their last hope. Asghar goes for a big shot over bowler Brathwaite's head but Jason Holder at the boundary takes a very well judged catch to mark the end of a little gem from Asghar. Could this signal the end of AFG resistance? No, not until Rashid is there

AFG vs WI Live: WICKET!

Another one bites the dust and this time via a run-out. Najibullah Zadran, who went for a second run after seeing that the 39-year old Gayle was after the ball, is run-out at the non-striker's end as Gayle pulls out of the chase at the last minute and Hetmyer fires a bullet throw towards Brathwaite who is waiting at the bowling end. Carlos doesn't waste any time in taking off the bails as AFG sink further

Gayle goes up in a confident aapeal and the umpire Nigel Llong raises his finger. Ali goes for a desperate review but the replays show all 3 reds and it's a big blow for AFG

Ikram breaks Tendulkar's record

After becoming the 3rd youngest half-centurion in World Cup history, Ikram Ali has now zoomed past the legendary Sachin Tendulkar as he now is the youngest to score 80+ in the tournament's history.

Jul 4, 2019 21:26 IST

SIX from Najibullah

Cleanest of strikes from Najibullah! First ball of Brathwaite's over and the left-hander lofts him straight over his head for a big six. The ball was in the slot to be hit and given Zadran's power it didn't seem like an effort shot. AFG chrging on here

Jul 4, 2019 21:08 IST

AFG vs WI Live: WICKET!

Rahmat is gone and the 133-run stand for the 2nd wicket is broken by Brathwaite. You'd have to say that it's a tame end to an enterprising innings as an incoming delivery hits Rahmat's bat high and an easy cath is lobbed towards Chris Gayle stationed at short cover. The big man dives forward and makes no mistake. Najibullah Zadran comes in as AFG no. 4

Jul 4, 2019 20:54 IST

Rahmat dropped by Cottrell

Oh dear! Sheldon Cottrell drops a sitter at long-on. Slater in commentary says: I'm afraid we can't salute that!. Rahmat went for a heave over the mid-wicket boundary but only managed to hit it straight as Cottrell settled nicely under it but the ball popped out of his hands and onto the ground. Cottrell picks and throws the ball in disgust as the bowler Brathwaite is left disappointed.

Jul 4, 2019 20:44 IST

AFG vs WI Live: FIFTY for Ikram

And right after his partner, Ikram Ali Khil has also scored his own half-century - maiden fifty of his ODI career and he looks absolutely delighted and why shouldn't he be. The AFG total is now above 100 and the duo in the middle are certainly looking good. Looks like we have a match on our hands

Jul 4, 2019 20:35 IST

AFG vs WI Live: FIFTY for Rahmat

Rahmat Shah brings up his 15th ODI fifty and what a time to score these runs as Afghnistan are trying to avoid the embarrasment of a win-less World Cup 2019 campaign. He has been composed at the crease while picking out the loose deliveries for some special treatment

Jul 4, 2019 20:31 IST

Ikram is now finding his feet too

While Rahmat has been seeing the ball really well and timing his shots to perfection, Ikram is also showing signs of his batting talent as he steps out to Fabian Allen and launches him over the mid-off reagion as the ball rushes to the boundary.

Jul 4, 2019 20:28 IST

FOUR from Rahmat

Rahmat Shah has shown at timews during the CWC19 that he is a top-class batsman and he is doing it again now as he pulls a short ball from Holder towards the square-leg boundary. It's proving to be a handy knock from the AFG opener

Jul 4, 2019 20:09 IST

AFG vs WI Live: 50-run stand is up

Rahmat Shah and Ikram Ali Khil have brought up the 50-run stand for the second wicket and more than the runs, what's been important for Afghanistan is the fact that they haven't lost any more wickets since losing their captain early

Jul 4, 2019 19:48 IST

Short-ball barrage continues

A technique that worked so well for WI in their opening match against Pakistan but didn't work the same way since then is still being used as the chief weapon by the team. And it's not reaping the rewards that they must have hoped for

Jul 4, 2019 19:43 IST

AFG vs WI Live: Rahmat Shah on the charge

Two superb boundaries of Rahmat's blade in the 7th over from Cottrell. First he caresses a wide ball past point for a boundary and 3 balls later plays a delicate on-drive between mid-on and mid-wicket for another sweetly timed boundary

Jul 4, 2019 19:31 IST

AFG vs WI Live: FOUR!

A poor delivery on the pads from Cottrell is glanced deftly past short-fine-leg by Ikram to earn his team a much needed boundary. It has been a slow start for AFG but they will need to build a strong foundation up first if they are to have any chance of chasing WI total

Jul 4, 2019 19:21 IST

AFG vs WI live: Ikram Ali Khil the new man in

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ikram Ali Khil, who had replaced Mohammad Shahzad, walks into bat at No. 3. He straightaway shows intent as he pulls as Kemar Roach bouncer to the deep-fine leg to collect 2 runs.

Jul 4, 2019 19:19 IST

Horrible start for Afghanistan! They lose captain Gulbadin Naib for 5. The righ-hander tried to clear the mid-wicket boundary with a big shot but gets caught inside he circle. Kemar Roach strikes in his first over. Not the ideal way to start when you're chasing 312.

Jul 4, 2019 19:13 IST

Captain Gulbadin Naib is out in the middle with Rahmat Shah as Afghanistan begin their chase of 312. Sheldon Cottrell with the new ball for the West Indies. Keep in mind, Afghanistan are yet to win a World Cup 2019 match and they would need a special effort to make it happen heere in Leeds.

2 wickets and 14 runs in an eventful final over. Carlos Brathwaite goes big in the final over to take West Indies past the 300-run mark. They finish with 311 for 6 in 50 overs. A fine batting effort from the West Indies in their final World Cup 2019 match. Is it too much for Afghanistan?

Jul 4, 2019 18:34 IST

RUN OUT! Nicholas Pooran falls for 58

Embarassing run out for West Indies in the first ball of the final over. Nicholas Pooran who was batting on 58 was at the non-striker's end and decided to steal a quick bye after Holder missed Sayed Shirzad's delivery. However, Holder didn't even move while Pooran ran to the striker's end. Good effort from the Afghanistan keeper as he got the throw to the right end and dismissed Pooran.

Jul 4, 2019 18:27 IST

Fifty for Nicholas Pooran!

Nicholas Pooran, mark the name! The young left-hander has followed his brilliant hundred vs Sri Lanka with a half-cenutry here. West Indies were in a spot of bother after losing Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer in quick succession. However, Pooran and Holder have taken the attack to Afghanistan bowlers and given West Indies a great chance to go past 300.

Jul 4, 2019 18:22 IST

15 runs from Zadran's over

The graph has gone up for the West Indies in the last 5 overs. Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder have taken the attack to Dawlat Zadran in the 47th over. 15 runs from it. West Indies are on course for a 300-plus score here.

Jul 4, 2019 18:17 IST

Dawlat Zadran into the attack

Afghanistna have brought back their pacer Dwalat Zadran for the 47th over. The right-arm fast bowler has been in fine form, picking up 2 wickets so far. He has the ability to take the pace off. Can he control the run flow now? West Indies have gone past the 250-run mark already.

Jul 4, 2019 18:16 IST

AFG vs WI live: Holder, Pooran attack

Jason Holder has taken up the responsibility of taking the attack in a bid to help West Indies finish with a late flourish. After hitting a huge six in Rashid Khan's 9th over, he launches one into the stands in Mujeeb Ur Rahman's over. The young mystery spinner leaks 16 runs in his penultimate over. Can West Indies finish strong here? Holder and Pooran the key for the West Indies.

Jul 4, 2019 18:02 IST

AFG vs WI live: Tidy over Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan was brought back into the attack and he does a fine job by giving away just 3 runs. Gulbadin Naib has been good with his bowling changes today. He has been rotating them well. Afghanistan have been using a lot of spinner in the last 10 overs. 5 overs of spin left in the last 8. How many more can West Indies add?

Jul 4, 2019 17:50 IST

AFG vs WI live: West Indies reach 200-run mark in the 40th over

200 up for the West Indies in the 40th over. Captain Jason Holder has joined Nicholas Pooran in the middle. West Indies were looking set to go past 300-run mark when Evin Lewis and Shai Hope were in their 88-run stand for the 2nd wicket. However, Afghanistan have done well to put the brakes on the scoring rate. Their spinners and Dawlat Zadran have struck in regular intervals to peg West Indies back. Can Jason Holder's men finish with a flourish?

Jul 4, 2019 17:43 IST

WICKET! Hope falls for 77

Shai Hope throws it away! He was looking set for a 3-figure score but departs in the 38th over. The young batsman had hit Mohammad Nabi for back-to-back boundaries in the first 2 balls of the over and goes for a heave over the mid-wicket but gets caught in the deep. Nabi, who has been a bit expensive today, gets the big wicket. West Indies needed Hope to stay and convert his knock into a big one.

Jul 4, 2019 17:38 IST

Shai Hope survives an LBW appeal

Shai Hope has been anchoring West Indies' innings ever since he walked out to bat after Chris Gayle's departure. The young right-hander, batting on 68, survived an LBW appeal against Dawlat Zadran, who has been extremely impressive for Afghanistan so far. It looked like the ball had trapped him in front but the umpire was unmoved. Replays show the ball would have missed the leg-stump.

Jul 4, 2019 17:33 IST

Nicholas Pooran is the new man

Nicholas Pooran is the new man in. The left-hander, another natural strokemaker, has headed into the match on the back of a valiant hundred against Sri Lanka in their previous match. He joins Hope with only 14 overs to go.

Jul 4, 2019 17:24 IST

WICKET! End of Hetmyer

Hetmyer c (sub)Noor Ali b Dawlat Zadran 39(31 balls). Short and wide from Zadran. Hetmyer pulled it but it did not come nice on the bat as the subsitute fielder at mid-wicket dives to pick it and dismiss Hetmyer.

Hetmyer c (sub)Noor Ali b Dawlat Zadran 39(31 balls). WI (174/3 in 34.5 ov) vs AFG. Hope (65*). Nicholas Pooran, left handed batsman, comes to the crease

Jul 4, 2019 17:23 IST

Hetmyer dropped!

Rashid Khan to Hetmyer, 2 runs. Hetmyer looked to hit that towards but skied it after getting a top-edge. It went too high, making it tough to catch for the two fielders running for it. In the ends, both of them miss it.

Jul 4, 2019 17:19 IST

Rashid Khan to Shai Hope, LBW Appeal, but not a passionate one. Rashid Khan appealed for it and Ikram Ali joined it but Gulbadin Naib did not look pleased to take a DRS has he singalled that the ball going high.

Jul 4, 2019 17:01 IST

AFG vs WI: Shai Hope gets to 5th ODI fifty

Shai Hope gets to his 5th ODI fifty. He was dropped by Rashid Khan early in his innings but the talented right-handed batsman has recovered well from it. He now has the support of Shimron Hetymer who is taking on the spinners.

Jul 4, 2019 16:53 IST

AFG vs WI: Hetmyer attacks Nabi

Shimron Hetmyer, it seems, has come out looking to attack everything that comes his way. The left-handed batsman is taking the attack to off-spinner Mohammad Nabi. After hitting a six in his previous over, Hetmyer collects a couple of boundaries. Nabi leaks 12 runs in his 7th over. Good counter-attacking stuff this from Hetmyer.

Jul 4, 2019 16:51 IST

AFG vs WI live: Shimron Hetymer the new man in

WICKET! Rashid Khan gets Evin Lewis for 58

West Indies looked to target Rashid Khan who has had an ordinary World Cup 2019 so far. After a series of tidy overs, Shai Hope hit Rashid for a couple of boundaries to begin the 25th over. However, Rashid got the big wicket of Evin Lewis for 58 when the left-handed opener tried to clear the mid-wicket boundary. The leg-spinner snaps an 88-run stand. He is delighted and relieved as well.

Jul 4, 2019 16:39 IST

AFG vs WI live: 100 up for West Indies

West Indies bring up their 100 in the 24th over. Evin Lewis and Shai Hope have added a fine 2nd wicket stand but the Afghanistan spinners have been able to pull things back. The last 8 overs have been tidy and the pressure is building up on the two batsmen. Something is going to give in. Can Afghanistan pick up another wicket here?

Jul 4, 2019 16:32 IST

Afghanistan spinners put the brakes on the scoring rate

Only 18 runs have come from the last 8 overs. Rashid Khan has been hard to get away in his first spell. So has been Mohammad Nabi. Good captaincy from Gulbadin Naib as well. He is having fielders at attacking positions despite the two batsmen having stitched a 50-run stand. Can they break this partnership and put more pressure on the West Indies?

Jul 4, 2019 16:26 IST

FIFTY! Evin Lewis hits 5th ODI half-century

Fifty for Evin Lewis. It's been a fine knock from the young West Indies opener who has lacked consistency in World Cup 2019. He also becomes the first West Indies cricketers to score a half-century against Afghanistan in ODI cricket.

Jul 4, 2019 16:17 IST

AFG vs WI live: Rashid Khan into the attack

Leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been brought into the attack. He had dropped Shai Hope early. Can he make amends here? The 2nd wicket stand has gone past the 50-run mark and Afghanistan are in need of a wicket here.

Jul 4, 2019 16:03 IST

AFG vs WI Live: SIX!

Nabi, who had bowled an economical first over, comes on to bowl his second and is instantly greeted by Shai Hope who charges down the ground and deposits a loopy delivery for a straight six over the bowler's head.

Jul 4, 2019 15:58 IST

Nabi into the attack

After slowing down the West Indies start by a notch, AFG have now employed their ace spinner Nabi into the attack hoping to induce a false shot from either Hope or Lewis. And the right-arm off-spinner instantly impresses by giving away just 3 runs

Jul 4, 2019 15:54 IST

Excellent start from Gulbadin

After receiving a lot of flak for bowling the final over of their last match against Pakistan resulting in a defeat, Gulbadin is back to what he does best and has managed to keep the WI duo quiet by bowling in a tight channel just outside of off-stump

Jul 4, 2019 15:36 IST

Lewis still going strong

After the dismissal of Gayle, Lewis has been joined by Shai Hope in the middle. But his senior partner's departure doesn't seem to have affected Lewis as he keeps chancing his arms against the AFG bowlers. Syed Shirzad becomes one of his victims as he bowls a ball which is just a touch short and Lewis swivels and pulls the ball high and over the fine leg boundary for a maximum

Jul 4, 2019 15:22 IST

Chris Gayle bows out of World Cups with 1186 runs in total

WICKET! Chris Gayle out for 7 (18 balls) in his final World Cup match. West Indies 21/1 (5.3 overs) vs Afghanistan. A full and wide delivery from Dawlat and Gayle backs away to try and hit it into oblivion but only manages an edge that travels safely into the keeper's hands. A tame end to possibly Gayle's last appearance in England

Jul 4, 2019 15:15 IST

First signs of aggression from Chris Gayle

Dawlat to Gayle, FOUR! Smashed back past the bowler. It was slightly short outside-off stump which Gayle decides to hit down the ground rather than over covers on the off-side. West Indies 15/0 (4 overs) vs Afghanistan. Chris Gayle (7*), Evin Lewis (8*)

Jul 4, 2019 15:12 IST

First boundary of the match

Mujeeb to Lewis, FOUR! Cut away on the off side for the first boundary of the match. West Indies 11/0 (3 overs) vs Afghanistan. Chris Gayle (3*), Evin Lewis (8*)

Jul 4, 2019 15:01 IST

Chris Gayle not ready to go gently into that good night

When Gayle appears in his 35th and last World Cup match on Thursday in Leeds, for West Indies against Afghanistan, cricket followers won't be watching to see him nudge the ball around to keep the fielders busy. They want to see the self-proclaimed great live up to his self-styled hype and hit sixes. Smear the bowlers to every boundary, and soaring over those, too. They want to see balls rainbowing into stands of dancing and singing fans.

Afghanistan vs West Indies: Hello and Welcome to our coverage of Match 42

Afghanistan came close to defeat India and Pakistan in their last two matches. However, their inability to cash-in on the crucial junctures of the game denied them with the opportunity of causing what would have been the biggest upsets in this edition of the World Cup.

While the spinners -- Mujeeb ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi -- have lived up to their reputation with consistent performances throughout the tournament, the fast bowlers and the batting unit have failed to contribute significantly to the team's cause, a main reason for their dismal performance so far.

However, against West Indies, they will feel confident as they have beaten them thrice in four completed matches.

West Indies, on the other hand, have failed to produce an all-round performance, barring their opening match victory against Pakistan where they bundled out the Green Brigade for mere 105.

The batsmen have failed to contribute consistently and the bowlers too have been guilty of coming out with only one plan against their opponents, making them almost ineffective on England pitches.

Despite some good individual performances, Windies have failed to put up a significant total due to the lack of partnerships. That's why, skipper Jason Holder will look to inspire his team to play with full intensity in their final game and end what has been a disappointing tournament on a high.
