Joleon Lescott has claimed a tweet he posted of an expensive car in the aftermath of Aston Villa's 6-0 to Liverpool was an accident.

Soon after his club's biggest defeat at Villa Park for 81 years, the centre-back posted an image of a Mercedes-Benz to his 823,000 followers on the social media site.

Some interpreted the tweet as some sort of cryptic response to the boos that he and his team-mates had endured from the Aston Villa fans during the match.

However, Lescott says the image was simply posted by accident.

"The tweet sent out from my account involving a picture of a car was totally accidental it happened whilst driving and my phone was in my pocket," he said.

Lescott's explanation did not come soon enough to avoid a barrage of abuse and bemusement...

As Lescott attempted to clear up the matter, he also apologised to fans for his and his team's performance that saw them concede four second half-half goals in the space of just 13 minutes.

"I'm not one for tweeting after games whether it's a good, bad or indifferent result but I would like to apologise for the performance today, personally and collectively," said the former Aston Villa and Manchester City player.

"Liverpool are and were better than us today but that doesn't excuse mine and the teams lack of commitment for the 90 minutes. Agains apologies to all the fans."
