Guillem Balague has said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Newcastle United are interested in signing Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.
The well-known and well-respected BBC journalist has claimed that Newcastle have already started talks with the agents of the former Tottenham Hotspur right-back.
Balague said: “I hear from Atletico Madrid that Newcastle are really interested in getting Trippier and they have started negotiations with his people. I am not sure if they will get him or not.”
Kieran Trippier would be brilliant for Newcastle
Trippier is 31 now, but the England international remains at the top of his game.
The former Spurs star is playing regularly for Atletico in La Liga and in the Champions League.
The former Manchester City prospect is also a regular for the England national football team.
We know from his time at Spurs just how good Trippier is.
The 31-year-old is good going on the attack and is defensively very solid.
Now, in our view, it is very unlikely that Newcastle will get Trippier in the January transfer window.
After all, Atletico are aiming to win the La Liga title, and the Magpies are in danger of going down to the Championship.
If a move is to happen, then it is more likely in the summer of 2022.
Atletico paid Tottenham £20 million in the summer of 2019 to sign Trippier, as reported by BBC Sport at the time.
