Paul Scholes has claimed that Tottenham bringing Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager this summer was ‘strange’, as he told Premier League Productions (11/09/21 at 12:20 pm).

It was a pretty long-winded affair when Spurs were searching for Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

It all stemmed back in April when the club sacked Mourinho, but towards the end of June, there were no signs of a new face, with names after names being linked with the job.

In the end, it seemed as though Nuno, who had just left Wolves in the summer, wasn’t their first choice, but a coach they opted to put faith in.

However, Scholes, prior to Tottenham’s defeat to Palace at the weekend, thinks Nuno played ‘very boring’ football at Molineux and he doesn’t think he fits the club’s philosophy.

“Going back to the manager, I felt it was a strange appointment,” said Scholes. “From watching Wolves during the past couple of years. If you think about Spurs, you think about entertainment all the time, don’t you?

“Pleasing the crowd. But he isn’t that type of manager, one bit. As you said, he’s very much like Jose. Very rigid. Trying to win games by getting one chance. Concede possession a lot.

“Watching Wolves the last couple of years has been very boring – we have to see how he does.”

It was a heavy defeat for Spurs at Selhurst Park and one that proved costly because Nuno lost two of his defenders.

Eric Dier limped off early on in the game, with what looked like a worrying injury.

Whilst Japhet Tanganga was shown two yellow cards in the space of a few minutes.

Before a ball was kicked, Spurs fans would have taken nine points from their opening four matches.

But following that defeat on Saturday, this is where the hard work and real test for Nuno starts.
