Scottish Premiership giants Rangers were reportedly keen on Tomas Kalas but Chelsea have sold him to Championship outfit Bristol City instead.
There’s a reason why Rangers’ links with Czech Republic defender Tomas Kalas grew cold.
Around Easter time, reports emerged suggesting that Chelsea’s perennial loanee could be on his way to Ibrox at the end of the 2018/19 season and the Bristol Post claims that Rangers even made an offer to sign him.
Since then, however, Kalas appears to have been forgotten as Steven Gerrard’s side turned their attention towards a number of alternative options, signing George Edmundson from Oldham Athletic a fortnight ago.
And now we know why any interest in Kalas was left by the wayside.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a fine spell at Bristol City last season and he has now returned to Ashton Gate on a permanent basis. And, according to the Bristol Post, Lee Johnson’s side have splashed out a staggering fee of £8 million – making Kalas their biggest signing ever.
A decade or so ago, Rangers might have been tempted to match Bristol City’s bid but after the recent financial crisis at Ibrox the Glasgow giants are understandably a little more reluctant to invest huge sums on individual players.
Paying just £650,000 for a talented youngster like Edmundson, as reported by the Scottish Sun, Rangers are a club who prioritise value these days.
And Kalas for £8 million? This is a risk they literally couldn’t afford to take.
