It’s probably safe to say that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is smitten with his acquisition of Nikola Katic.

The big centre-back joined Rangers for around £2 million in June but he is already making all the right kind of noises.

The Croatian defender is rapidly making a name for himself after forging an excellent partnership alongside Connor Goldson at the heart of the Gers defence.

On Thursday, Katic scored Rangers’ only goal of the night as Gerrard’s men moved into the third round of Europa League qualifying with a 2-1 aggregate win over Osijek.

And the Liverpool icon seems absolutely delighted with his signing.

He told STV: “Love him, love him. I absolutely love him.”

Asked if he was a “hot prospect”, Gerrard then added emphatically: “Oh is he, but he’s mine.”

If Katic and Goldson can maintain their solid understanding in the Scottish Premiership then it’s a brilliant thing from a Rangers perspective.

They scored more goals than any other Premiership team last season. It is their defence which cost them last time around, but an increased solidity and the Gers might be capable of exciting things this term.
