Steve Clarke explains why Celtic midfielder David Turnbull wasn't selected

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has explained David Turnbull's omission for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Celtic rising star has not been called up for the national side's triple-header against Austria, Israel and Faroe Islands.

Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie, John Fleck, John McGinn and Callum McGregor are among the midfielders selected by Clarke instead.

And the Scotland head coach insists he has a "strong midfield" but Turnbull is one for the future.

Clarke said: "The midfield is very strong. David is doing really well and certainly one for the future, one to keep an eye on."

Greg Taylor joins Christie and McGregor as part of the Celtic contingent, while Rangers duo Ryan Jack and Jon McLaughlin have been included.

Nathan Patterson is another youngster who didn't make the cut despite impressing for Steven Gerrard's side in recent weeks filling in for James Tavernier.
