Second RideLondon cyclist dies in hospital after crashing into tree

Richard Kell was airlifted to hospital but passed away three weeks after being seriously injured during RideLondon's 100-mile amateur sportive

The cyclist who crashed into a tree during RideLondon tragically died in hospital, it has been revealed.

Richard Kell, 71, who was from North Abingdon in Oxfordshire, was airlifted to hospital following the accident on Sunday July 31, which happened during the RideLondon-Surrey 100 near Pyrford.

Mr Kell is understood to have been in a coma but sadly passed away on August 23.

He was part of the Outdoor Traders Cycling Club, which has since paid tribute to Mr Kell and renamed its autumn cycling events the Richard Kell Memorial Series.

"Richard was one of two riders airlifted from the Ride London event earlier in the summer," said the club in a Facebook post.

"Unfortunately, after fighting for a number of weeks, Richard passed away."

Mr Kell's RideLondon fundraising page has since been inundated with tributes to a "genuine all round great guy and a true gent".

A spokesman for RideLondon said: "Very sadly, we confirm that Richard Kell, aged 71 from Abingdon, has died as a result of injuries sustained during the RideLondon-Surrey 100.
