FC Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi called Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos an idol while on the cusp of making his senior Spain international debut.
The Catalan has become a regular at the Montjuic Stadium under head coach Xavi Hernandez, as another teenage La Masia product that has graduated early from the world famous academy to join the Barca first team.
After winning the MVP against Napoli in the Champions League last Tuesday, Cubarsi spoke about enjoying "one of the best days of my life".
He said he would be keeping a close eye on the revelation of Spain boss Luis de la Fuente's squad list for upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Spain, plus the elite European competition's draw - which pitted the Blaugrana against what Xavi called "one of the worst teams" to face - before the weekend.
As it turned out, though, Cubarsi had to be informed by a member of staff at Barca that he'd been called up, as he explained in an interview with the RFEF.
"Everything is happening very fast but I am living it very calmly. I finished training and it was the same day as the Champions League draw," the youngster said.
"The physical trainer congratulated me, I was shocked because I still didn't know that the squad list had come out. When I saw that it was true, everyone started congratulating me. My parents are a bit on cloud nine themselves too, because they're watching their son climb up the ranks.
"They are very happy. They tell me to be myself, to play calmly like I know how to and to play my football," Cubarsi added.
It isn't lost on Cubarsi that he could become the youngest Spanish defender to debut for the 2010 World Cup winners since Sergio Ramos.
And despite his history as a Real Madrid center back who often bore the brunt of Culers' rage, Cubarsi called him an "idol".
"It would be a dream come true if I can achieve this goal and pass Sergio Ramos, who is an idol. I would be very happy".
Though he cited fellow Catalans Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol as references, Cubarsi doesn't wish to be compared to anyone and stated: "I want to be myself".
On his relationship with fellow teen sensation Lamine Yamal, Cubarsi said the pair "have shared many experiences together at Barca".
"We're enjoying it to the fullest. It's all like a dream, to be sharing all these experiences with a colleague you've been with for so many years. We're trying to make the most of all these opportunities," Cubarsi insisted.
