Why there's no room for Scottish Premiership colt teams in the lower leagues

A look at why lower league fans and clubs don't want Premiership youth teams in an expanded SPFL.

DO you remember the game Whack-A-Mole?

It was an attraction which could be found at the funfair or in an amusement arcade. You would enthusiastically grab a hammer and be the very picture of concentration waiting for one of the little blighters to pop up.

Great fun could be had and if you got to the end of your shot having whacked them all, there would be a sense of satisfaction. Mission accomplished.

For those against the introduction of Colt teams to the SPFL, the debate feels a bit like Whack-A-Mole although there is no end in sight and it would appear those running the game are simply waiting for our arms to get tired.

They will be waiting a while. Every time the subject is brought back to the surface, the reaction from most, if not all, lower-league fans is no. No, no, no. The answer’s still no.

As well as being remarkably persistent, the SFA and SPFL top brass are both blind and tone deaf. If they are not ignoring the poor attendances from dozens of Irn-Bru Cup matches involving Colt teams, they refuse to listen to what supporters are telling them.

This has been third season of Scottish Premiership ‘B’ teams taking part in a competition which was originally an opportunity for clubs outwith the top flight to win a piece of national silverware, although the presence of ringers from England’s National League, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland can be contested another day.

That’s because no one is suggesting Boreham Wood or Bohemians are admitted to the SPFL league ranks but there is a desire and a determination to have Colt teams participating on a weekly basis.
