Sources: Tottenham paid £6m fee to Mendes to seal Doherty signing from Wolves
Tottenham paid super agent Jorge Mendes a £6million fee to seal the signing of Matt Doherty from Wolves, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The capture of the right-back, 29, last summer cost Spurs a total of £16m after signing a four-year contract.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that only £10m of the transfer cost went to Wolves, with the remainder to agent Mendes for fixing the deal.
It was a deal that raised a few eyebrows at the time given Mendes’ links to the parties involved.
The renowned agent is not just an advisor to Wolves, but also the agent of Doherty himself, Molineux boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho.
The Republic of Ireland international had been expected to be a mainstay of the Tottenham line-up this season.
But that has not been quit the case, with the erratic Serge Aurier often preferred at right-back for the major matches.
He has started 14 of Spurs’ 25 Premier League games this season, including Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing of Burnley.
Doherty has started nine league fixtures among 24 appearances in all competitions.
It is perhaps a back-handed compliment that the 15-times Ireland international has started nine of the 11 Europa League matches, often against weaker opposition.
At Wolves, Doherty was used mainly in a wing-back role and was a regular scorer and creator of goals.
At Tottenham, he is yet to open his account although he has supplied three assists.
