Former Premier League referee gives verdict on Anthony Knockaert's challenge on Luka Milivojevic

The Brighton star was booked after 28 seconds against Palace, but should it have been a red card?

It was a challenge that left Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson "incensed" as Anthony Knockaert was only shown a yellow card during Brighton's win at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

But should the Brighton & Hove Albion star have been sent off for his challenge on Palace captain Luka Milivojevic after just 28 seconds of the clash between the two arch rivals?

Not according to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, who said that referee Craig Pawson made the correct decision by just booking the Frenchman, who went on to score the winner later in the game.

"I think the referee [Craig Pawson] has got it almost right," Gallagher said during Sky Sports' ref watch feature.

"I think both players are culpable and I do not think it is a red card because both players go two footed.

"[Luka] Milivojevic, for me, is equally culpable, he has gone with his boots as well and a split second the other way, it could have been a boot in the other person.

"So I think both players should have got yellow cards there and it has to be quite a serious foul for a red card, so the referee was quite right not to send him off."

After the game, Palace boss Hodgson said he was "incensed" by the fact that Knockaert was still on the pitch to score the winner, but Brighton boss Chris Hughton said it was "absolutely not a red card".
