Bernard Tomic has been dropped by Head after his controversial comments

BERNARD TOMIC has been dropped by tennis equipment giant Head after a string of comments about being bored by the game after his Wimbledon exit.

The Australian was beaten in straight sets by Mischa Zverev in the first round of the second major of the year earlier this week.

Tomic then held a controversial press conference, claiming he was “bored” during the match and admitting to using a medical timeout as a “strategy” to disrupt his opponent, and the referees’ office subsequently fined the 24-year-old more than £10,000 - the second-largest single fine in the tournament’s history.

And now the former junior Australian and US Open champion has been hit in the pocket once again after his racket sponsor head revealed today that they would end their association with him.

“We were extremely disappointed with the statements made at Wimbledon by one of our sponsored athletes, Bernard Tomic,” a statement from Head read.

“His opinions in no way reflect our own attitude for tennis, our passion, professionalism and respect for the game.

“Therefore, we have decided to discontinue our collaboration with Bernard Tomic.”

Tomic was once heralded as the future of Australian tennis and made a run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon back on 2011, beating No5 seed Robin Soderling before taking Novak Djokovic to four sets.

However, he now appears resigned to a career of mediocrity and was startlingly candid in the wake of his defeat to Zverev.

“I wasn't mentally and physically there with my mental state to perform,” Tomic said on Tuesday.

“I don't know why, but, you know, I felt a little bit bored out there.

“You know, to be completely honest with you.

“So I tried at the end and stuff, he managed to win that set 6-3 or 6-4, but it was too late.

“It's tough, you know. I'm 24. I have done, came on tour at 16, 17. I have been around and feels like I'm super old, but I'm not.

“So, you know, just trying to find something, you know, this is my 8th Wimbledon or 9th I think. I’m still 24, and it's tough to find motivation, you know.

“Really, me being out there on the court, to be honest with you, I just couldn't find any motivation.

“To me, this is one of the biggest tournaments in the world that I have done really well in my career, and, yeah, I just couldn't find anything. It's happened to me a lot. Just can't find anything on the court.”
