Arsenal boss Unai Emery and his backroom staff have been criticised by the Gunners hero for their touchline behaviour at Anfield.

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon was not impressed with what Unai Emery and a couple of his staff were doing during last Saturday’s defeat at Liverpool.

The Gunners went down 3-1 in the Premier League clash at Anfield thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip’s powerful header.

But there was a moment in the first half that Dixon and former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend picked up on.

Head coach Emery and two of his staff were on the touchline, appearing to bark orders at their players.

You’ve got so many things going on, the last thing you need is a coach to be going ‘yeah but you should be doing that'

On the incident, Townsend told Premier League Productions: “This is interesting Lee, this is a throw in.

“We’ve just seen [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang who’s just gone off the pitch, he’s just come back on the pitch.

“And this happens a lot - Unai Emery is a very demonstrative and animated coach and then once he starts and his staff are the pointing fingers and trying to direct traffic, I think sometimes as a player you can get dragged into that and start perhaps finding yourself in a bad position.”

Dixon agreed with Townsend that having that many people shout at you from the sideline can be to the detriment of a player.

“You’re absolutely right because already there’s three people up there shouting things,” the former Arsenal right-back replied.

“There needs to be a calmness. It’s a throw in, they’ve lost the ball.

“Coaches give information and you know, you’ve played at the highest level.

“You know most of the stuff that gets shouted from the sidelines, you don’t listen to it.

“You’ve got so many things going on, the last thing you need is a coach to be going ‘yeah but you should be doing that, should be doing that’.

“He can’t coach everybody so he’s coaching the nearest and if the nearest one makes a bad decision, everybody else follows.”
