Mr Batten, the leader of Ukip told Sky News: “It is obvious to the British public now that Theresa May is betraying Brexit and she is going to go on doing that.

“That is causing immense anger among the population and a lot of people are joining us because of that.”

Over 3000 people have joined Ukip since Theresa May’s Chequers plan was agreed on July 6, with 485 people joining in the south-east alone, according to figures given to Sky News.

The south-west has also seen a rise of 304 members, and 300 in East Anglia.

On Monday a Downing Street spokesman said: “We remain confident of getting a good deal.

“The fact is that we are ramping up our no deal preparations, as was planned, because there was always a possibility of no deal.”

The Prime Minister’s soft Brexit Chequers agreement caused the resignation of a number of frontbenchers including Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

The International Trade Secretary Liam Fox broke ranks on Sunday and said a no deal scenario was at “60-40” and blamed the “intransigence” of the European Commission for the current stalemate in Brexit talks after Mrs May’s Chequers proposals were rejected.

He told The Sunday Times: “If the EU decides that the theological obsession of the unelected is to take priority over the economic well-being of the people of Europe then it’s a bureaucrats’ Brexit - not a people’s Brexit.

“There is only going to be one outcome.”

He added: ”I think the intransigence of the commission is pushing us towards no deal.”

Mrs May met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday, cutting her holiday in Italy short to meet him in the hopes of gaining support for her Brexit proposals.

The Prime Minister also secured the chance to put her proposals to EU heads of state at an informal summit on September 20.
