The clip shows an innocent black and white dog catapulted into the air before letting out a small bark as he hits the sea below. The dog is seen swimming back to surface but the video ends before it gets to the shore. Police confirmed in a later statement that the dog was uninjured and that an investigation into the incident has been launched. In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police are investigating a report of concern for the welfare of an animal in Falmouth on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 1.

“This relates to a dog being thrown into the sea. The dog has been checked over and is uninjured. The investigation is ongoing and inquiries are continuing.”

The clip was repeatedly shared online but copies of it have since been deleted.

Police have urged the public not to get involved in the investigation after the video led to an outcry on social media.

The police statement said: “We ask that people, including users of social media, do not speculate around the circumstances of this incident, or the individual involved.

“We are aware of threats that have been made online would urge members of the public to leave this investigation with the police, and not to take the law into their own hands.”

The RSPCA defines cruelty as “overt and intentional acts of violence” or “neglect” to an animal.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “We have been made aware of some upsetting footage showing a dog being thrown off a cliff in Falmouth on May 1.

“We are very concerned about this incident and would like to reassure people we are looking into it.”

“We’d like to thank everyone who has reported this to us so far and would urge any eyewitnesses or anyone with further information to ring the RSPCA inspectorate appeal line in 0300 123 8018 to help us with our ongoing investigation.”
