Sheffield Wednesday have rejected a bid from Brentford for Barry Bannan, reports claim.

The talismanic Scottish midfielder is one of the longest-serving players at Wednesday, having joined five years ago.

Wednesday would be loathe to lose the 30-year-old, who is in the final year of his current deal.

He was recently appointed captain and is a focal point for the team.

Sky Sports' Keith Downie tweeted that Wednesday have rejected a bid from Bannan from the Bees, with no fee discussed or mooted.

It is not the first time Bannan and Brentford have been mentioned in the same breath.

Earlier this year, gave an interview to Scottish media when he highlighted Brentford as a team that would be "perfect" for him to play in.

"It sounds selfish but maybe if a team was built around the way I play, it would have brought the best out in me," said Bannan.

"I had it in my first year at Sheffield Wednesday with our Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal, who really took to me. That’s when I shone but it’s just about getting breaks in your career, and it’s also about timing.

"Look at Brentford now in the Championship. It would be perfect for me to play in a team like that.

"But that’s football. There’s plenty of players in the same boat as me."

Bannan later clarified the comments, saying: "Just to clear things up my latest interview with the Scottish newspapers.

"People getting mixed up because I complimented Brentford on their play this season. Don't mean I want to sign for them.

"I've made clear my whole time I been here I love it and that has not changed."

Bannan has made more than 200 appearances for Wednesday since arriving from Crystal Palace in 2015.

Brentford, who were losing play-off finalists last term, are thought to be on the verge of selling star asset Saïd Benrahma - hence their desire for quality replacements.
