It is the news Sheffield Wednesday fans have been waiting to hear all summer.

The English Football League has given the Owls the green light to trade again.

It emerged last night just before England's European Championship semi-final clash against Denmark at Wembley that the League One club were not included in the governing body's published list of clubs working under the terms of a transfer embargo.

Hull City, Derby County and Reading are the three Championship clubs operating under restrictions ahead of the 2021/22 season, Fleetwood Town and Gillingham in League One while Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United and Swindon Town from League Two find themselves in the dock.

Yorkshire Live understands Wednesday have been in regular dialogue with the EFL for some time over getting their embargo lifted and the latest development comes just after the club submitted their accounts for the 2019/20 season.

Sheffield Wednesday have so much to do

But sources have told this publication that the Owls are still working under some restrictions. Wednesday's recruitment team have focused mainly on identifying and lining up free transfers and loan additions.

Yet it remains unclear whether the Owls will be allowed to spend any money on transfer fees. It is thought player wages' must be at a sensible level.

Cash flow problems have hit Wednesday hard in the past 18 months and the coronavirus pandemic has left a huge hole in the finances of many EFL clubs with empty stadiums resulting in a significant loss of revenue. In recent months, there have been several instances where the Owls have not paid their players in full or on time.
