Over 50 million people have been through Sheffield Wednesday’s turnstiles to watch league football.

Crowds of people have been flocking to football grounds for generations in Britain.

It’s been 132 years since the first football league season kicked off in 1888.

An average of 4,639 people went to each league match that season according to figures from european-football-statistics.co.uk.

By the end of the campaign, a combined total of 612,370 people had walked through the turnstiles.

Everton had the highest total attendance for their home games that season at 79,860, an average of 7,260 per game.

Fast forward to the present day and the top four divisions of English football have had a cumulative attendance of a massive 2.4 billion people.

Wednesday’s home games make up 51.6 million of that total.
