Former Academy Director, USL Head Coach Tony Annan officially departs Atlanta United

Atlanta United Academy Director and Atlanta United 2 Head Coach Tony Annan has officially left the club as of June 1. While mainly working behind the scenes until taking a more visible role as the head coach of the club’s USL side, Annan’s established himself as one of the most respected in his field in domestic soccer. He and the club posted goodbyes in recent days.

Before Atlanta United ever kicked the ball against New York Red Bulls at Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2017, Annan had the youth setup up-and-running and had already started filling the club’s trophy cabinet at the training ground with various youth cups. Annan was key in establishing and refining the pathway for potential homegrown players to be scouted and rise through the ranks to become professional players at the top domestic level.

Annan leaves the club to become the head coach of the University of South Carolina men’s soccer program. Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Boacnegra issued a statement when the announcement was initially made public in April.

“It’s bittersweet to announce Tony’s departure from Atlanta United, as he has been an integral factor for our success over the last five years and has truly been a pleasure to work with,” Bocanegra said in the statement. “In 2016, we became the first MLS Academy to launch prior to its First Team, and it put us in the position that we are in today, which includes several professional signings who have gone on to play meaningful minutes, as well more than 40 other Academy players who have received Division 1 scholarships. We want to thank Tony for his years of service to the club and wish him success at the University of South Carolina.”
