Preston take on Brentford in the Championship this weekend, but they will have to do it without Greg Cunningham.

The Irishman notably missed out against Norwich City and Swansea City over the Easter set of games without much official news about his absence.

Cunningham hasn’t actually played at all since the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on March 6th, leaving some wondering where he is right now.

Interim head coach Frankie McAvoy has now confirmed that Cunningham will miss the game against Brentford, having been suffering with a ‘recurring problem’.

McAvoy noted that Cunningham will be out for another week or two, adding that North End don’t want to rush him back too quickly.

Cunningham’s return to North End in January was an emotional moment for many, as he was a real favourite in his first spell at Preston.

We had the memorable moment of Cunningham firing home the opener against Blackburn Rovers in February, and it’s been great to see him back at Deepdale.

Soon though, North End will face a big decision on Cunningham. His contract expires this summer, and an extension isn’t a foregone conclusion.

When fit, Cunningham is the best left back at the club, but that’s a big qualifier. Cunningham has been through a number of injury woes since leaving Preston in 2018, and this latest injury is another warning for Preston.

The 30-year-old has been out for around a month now, and this may be a blow to his hopes of staying long-term as North End won’t want to commit precious funds to a player who may miss games regularly.
