The former Black Cats star believes the boss is talking the Black Cats into a relegation battle.
And he says it’s all down to his negative attitude.
Hutchinson told the Chronicle: “There are problems but for me the biggest thing I’ve noticed is Moyes himself.
“He has come across as very negative so far – and I think he needs to change the message that he’s getting out there. It’s far too negative.
“His statements so far seem to concentrate on the problems at Sunderland and he’s been very clear about the prospect of a relegation fight this season.
“It feels to me that he’s actually talking the club into one.
“It’s obvious to everyone that things aren’t perfect there but he likes to think of himself as a top Premier League manager, so shouldn’t he be turning around and saying ‘I can fix it’?
“I’m friendly with Slaven Bilic at West Ham and I texted him on Monday morning and told him ‘Go in on Monday and be as positive as you can’.
What's hot
“It was the message that Peter Reid and Howard Kendall always hammered home to me when I was at Sunderland and Everton.
“If you’ve lost at the weekend and you go in on Monday with a face like thunder concentrating on the negatives then that mood can drag into Tuesday and Wednesday’s training sessions.”
Sunderland have taken just one point from their opening five matches.
