Experts say veggies suffer because of a shortage of vitamins and minerals in their diet, which is having a knock-on effect on their mental health.

The Bristol University study found vegetarians scored a higher than average depression score.

A lack of meat led to a lower intake of vitamin B12 and eating more nuts leads to higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids, with both linked to mental health problems.

The report added: “Other potential factors include high blood levels of phytoestrogens, consequent mainly on diets rich in vegetables and soya.

“And lower intakes of seafood are thought to be associated with greater risk of depressive symptoms.”

However, not eating red meat – like celebrity vegan Gwyneth Paltrow – lowers the danger of heart problems, obesity and diabetes.

But 7% of veggies don’t have enough vitamin B12, which plays a key role in producing brain chemicals which affects people’s moods.
