Rangers face John Souttar competition with Derby 'in pole position' for £5m Hearts star

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with both clubs but reports suggest Derby are now favourites to sign him.

Derby are said to be in pole position for Hearts defender John Souttar as they eye up a £5million move.

The Scotland international is also wanted by Rangers, as we exclusively revealed on April 12.

But Steven Gerrard faces big competition from his former foe Frank Lampard who wants to take the highly-rated 22-year-old down south, according to TeamTalk.

The report suggests the English Championship side are leading the race to sign Souttar, who is keen to move to England.

Last week, Hearts boss Craig Levein insisted Souttar wouldn't be willing to move to Ibrox from Tynecastle.

He was asked about a potential switch at the end of his press conference and walked out after saying: "I'm not sure John would go there to be honest. No, I don't think so."

The centre back is among Gerrard's top targets for the summer with Joe Worrall set to leave at the end of his loan deal and Gareth McAuley out of contract.

It means the Ibrox side need competition for Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic ahead of next season.
