Premiership clubs paid out an eye-watering £5,928,992 on agent fees in the last year, new figures have revealed.

Unsurprisingly Celtic and Rangers were by far the biggest spenders - forking out a combined £2,626,299 between them on intermediaries.

The Hoops have paid out more than the rest of the top flight combined, however.

The newly crowned 8 in a row champions were the biggest spenders and their total bill for the period February 1, 2018, to January 31, 2019, taking in thew last two transfer windows, was almost double that of their rivals from across the city.

Celtic brought in record signing Odsonne Edouard at £9million during the period while Steven Gerrard oversaw a huge overhaul of the first-team squad at Ibrox with Jermain Defoe, Connor Goldson and Allan McGregor among the marquee signings.

Hibs came in third while Aberdeen and Hearts were next in the table, according to the figures published by the SFA.

St Mirren were the only top flight club not to spend a penny on agents. But the report shows Ross County spent more than five top flight clubs on intermediaries as they booked their return to the Premiership.

The fees are a drop in the ocean compared to those forked out south of the border though.

Celtic may outspend the rest of the competition in Scotland but their agent fees are dwarfed by even the lowest spenders in the cash crazy Premier League.

While the Hoops bill came to £1,710,373, Burnley's total was £3,975,928. And they were the lowest spending EPL side.

To put the Scottish spending in perspective Premier League clubs shelled out a staggering £260.6million on agents fees in the same period. Liverpool, were the biggest spenders by some distance, splashing out an eye-watering £43.8million.
