The good people of Portugal no longer need convincing.
But right now it’s one guy in Scotland who Ryan Gauld hopes to have impressed most.
National team boss Steve Clarke will name his provisional 26-man Euro 2020 squad on Wednesday and he’s got plenty of big decisions to make.
A few weeks ago, his pool of players for the Finals looked set.
But now? After Kenny McLean and Ryan Jack’s agonising withdrawals through injury, a door has been opened for fresh faces.
And Clarke will be doing the whole country a disservice if he doesn’t at least consider Farense playmaker Gauld who scored the winner in his side’s 1-0 victory over Tondela in Portugal on Saturday.

Seven years after moving from Dundee United to Sporting Lisbon for £3million, Gauld has finally made people in his adopted country sit up and take note.

His club might be toiling near the foot of the Primeira Liga but if Farense survive, their Scottish captain will have almost single-handedly kept them up.
No other player in Portugal this season has made more key passes in the final third, nor collected more Man of the Match awards.
And with nine goals and six assists so far, only Ike Ugbo at Cercle Brugge and England star Jadon Sancho at Borussia Dortmund are above him in the list of goal involvements from British stars abroad.
In short, Gauld is now showing why Sporting slapped a 60m euros release clause on him when he arrived from Tannadice.
But he craves one thing to cap a terrific campaign – Scotland recognition.
And the 25-year-old reckons he could barely have done any more to force his way into Clarke’s thinking for the Euros.
As a kid, he watched every Scotland game on TV or live on the odd road trip from Laurencekirk to Hampden.

Now, he wants to fulfil his dream of pulling on a dark blue shirt at a major tournament.
Gauld said: “There was a bit of hype around me when I first came over to Portugal but I didn’t really show what I could do, whether it was taking time to adapt to the culture, or whatever.
"This year, I’ve put together a string of performances and shown what I can do. We’re in a tough situation at the club, fighting to stay up.
"But I’ve been able to show people what they expected of me when I first came over and that feels good.
“In the games we’ve had against the big four clubs we’ve gone toe-to-toe with them. We didn’t just sit back to defend.
“That proves that we have good players who can compete against the best teams and those are the games which give me the most satisfaction.
“I don’t think I’ve done anything to harm my chances with Scotland.
“Also, getting recognition from people watching the league has meant a lot.
“I’ve had the most Man of the Match awards so that can’t have done my chances any harm at all.
“I feel as if I’ve done my bit now. There’s not much else I can do.”
Gauld will surely be competing with the likes of Celtic’s David Turnbull and Chelsea ace Billy Gilmour for a spot in Clarke’s squad.
He represented Scotland up to Under-21 level, when he was widely regarded as one of the most prodigious talents of his generation.
And he’d love nothing more than to hook up with the full squad, which will be named this week.
Gauld said: “In terms of getting back into the squad, the fact it’s for a major finals would just be an added bonus.
“It is what I’ve always dreamed of doing. Even in the Portuguese second division, it was always with the thought of getting regular games so I could prove I’m worthy of a shout with Scotland.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted and I’d never give up on the chance to do it.
“The desire to play for Scotland has always been in me. It will always be there. I was only three years old for France 98, the last time we qualified for a tournament.
“My earliest memory is going to watch the Scotland Future squad at Pittodrie, and my dad took me and my brother to Hampden a couple of times for games.
“There was never a Scotland game on TV that I missed as a kid.
“Back then it was a dream to think that one day I might actually be out there playing for my country.
“It’s what you always want, what you always picture yourself doing. It’s only as time goes on in your career, you realise it might be a possibility.
“So it would be brilliant to get the opportunity now to do it.”
And if Gauld does make Clarke’s squad, his ability on the ball isn’t the only thing he will add.
Leadership qualities weren’t something you’d have associated with him when he left Dundee United as a teenager.
But as Farense’s captain, he now has added responsibility which has helped develop another side to his game and his character.
He said: “On the pitch, the captaincy has given me that extra bit of confidence because you know the rest of the team and the manager believe in you.
“It’s the first time I’ve been captain of a team. I would never have pictured that when I came over here seven years ago!
“It maybe wasn’t in my nature when I was younger. But I’ve taken to the role.
“I’ve tried to help out younger lads in the team because I know what it’s like and it’s not always easy.
“So, it’s been a different season in a lot of ways for myself.
“It hasn’t been easy for the team but personally I’ve had one of my best seasons.
“When you look at the amount of games I’ve played, the minutes I’ve got – it’s been brilliant for me so far.
“I’ve always just wanted a proper crack at the Portuguese top division and, thankfully this season, I have got that.”
