For years it was the cornerstone of Scotland’s success on the international stage.

When Craig Brown had us qualifying for major tournaments – Euro 96 in England and the 1998 World Cup in France – the foundations were built on a three-man defensive rock.

We’ve never been back at that level since and slowly that solidity at the back has eroded.

Now one of the best centre-halves of his generation is trying to introduce it again.

It’s still early in Alex McLeish’s second stint as Scotland boss.
