The Met Office has confirmed that the pictures do show a funnel cloud which could have touched the ground.

A funnel cloud must touch the ground for it to be considered a tornado.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: "It’s certainly a funnel cloud.

"For it to be a confirmed tornado the funnel cloud must touch the ground, however as there are some trees in the way we can’t say for certain.

"It does look very close to the ground so it may have briefly touched down as a weak tornado.

"Around 1pm there were some heavy thundery showers in the area which had the potential to produce funnel clouds and tornados".

Weather warnings have been in place for Scotland over the weekend.

Although things brightened up for some this evening, a weather warning for rain is back in force from 3pm on Sunday.

The yellow warning for rain remains in place until midnight on Monday and covers the west of Scotland.

The Met Office has issued the warning due to risk of homes and businesses being flooded, delays or cancellations to public transport and road closures.
