A Premiership football boss was ordered to hand over £34,000 in a dirty money probe.

Livingston’s assistant manager David Martindale was banned from selling property he owned until he paid the cash.

Prosecutors targeted a £350,000 flat in Edinburgh’s Ravelston area after a proceeds of crime investigation into his assets.

In June 2016, they were granted a court order which banned Martindale from selling the flat until he paid them the cash.

Last week, the block was still registered against the property, which Martindale, 44, shares with his wife Martha, 41, and their daughter.

But the Crown Office said the sum had now been paid and the restriction will be lifted.

Martindale was jailed for six-and-a-half years in 2006 after being caught in an undercover police drugs sting.

The ex-junior player was described in court as having a hands-on role in a lucrative cocaine smuggling ring.

In 2007, Martindale was ordered to hand over £167,000 of his criminal assets, although prosecutors eventually accepted about £100,000.

Alexander Donnelly is one of Scotland's biggest drug dealers

Last year, Crown Office investigators discovered fresh assets which they went to the High Court to seize.

A spokeswoman said: “In August 2007, David Martindale’s benefit from criminal conduct was recorded in court as £275,000. A confiscation order was granted for £167,718.16, given his assets at the time.

“It was varied in 2012 to £99,785 to take account of the amount those assets had realised and the order was paid in full.

“When the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service became aware of new assets, an application was made to court to vary the confiscation order in 2017.

“A restraint order was granted to prevent the sale and transfer of the property.

“The application to increase the order by £34,000 was granted in June 2017. That has been paid and the order will be withdrawn.”

As well as his role with Livingston FC, Martindale is the sole director of a building firm in Edinburgh.

At the time of his arrest in 2006, he was said to be the right-hand man of Glasgow drugs baron Alexander Donnelly, who was jailed for 10 years.

Donnelly, 60, returned to crime in 2011, shortly after being freed from jail. He is serving 10 years for his part in a £200,000 heroin ring.

Martindale’s position at Livingston remains a source of controversy among fans and pundits.
