Chelsea legend John Terry ruthlessly taunted Tottenham over their trophy drought during Aston Villa's 2-1 victory on Wednesday night - and then laughed about 'different stadium, same old story'.

The Villa No 2 received some flak from a large segment of the 10,000 Spurs fans in attendance - who were allowed into the stadium as lockdown restrictions were eased – after they started singing their song about Ledley King being better than him.

But the ex-Chelsea captain gave them a taste of their own medicine and responded by holding aloft an imaginary trophy, poking fun at the club's failure to win a single cup since 2008.

'Ooh Ledley Ledley, he's only got one knee, he's better than John Terry, oooh Ledley Ledley.'

Terry's mocking of Tottenham continued on Instagram after the match, sharing a post about his light-hearted riposte alongside 17 trophy emojis and two laughing faces.

In another post on Instagram, Terry wrote: 'Great way to bounce back tonight. I enjoyed that one. Well done Ollie Watkins and a big congratulations to Carney Chukwuemeka and Jaden Philogene-Bidace. Superb team performance. Different stadium, Same old story, 3 points...'

The 40-year-old, who retired from playing back in 2018, is one of England's most decorated players, having won 17 major trophies during his 19-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

His trophy cabinet includes five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups and one Champions League.

Terry also got the last laugh over the Spurs supporters as Villa left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with all three points.

Ryan Mason's men had got off to the perfect start, with Steven Bergwijn giving the hosts the lead after just eight minutes.

But Villa fought back to claim victory thanks to Sergio Reguilon's own goal and a strike from Watkins to leave Tottenham needing a win and results to go their way on the last day of the season to qualify for the Europa League.

Although Terry's quip at Spurs fans would perhaps have been viewed in good nature by most, it was also perhaps a painful reminder of why their star striker Harry Kane wants to leave.

The England captain informed the club earlier this week he wants to sign for a new club this summer in order to match his personal ambition of winning trophies.

Manchester City have emerged as the favourites to sign Kane but could have to fork out a whopping £150million to seal his signature. Chelsea are also in the running.

Kane has never won a trophy with Spurs, losing in the Champions League final in 2019 and the Carabao Cup final earlier this year.
