Leicester City celebrate the Premier League title: Players and supporters find a rousing soundtrack to perfect season as Andrea Bocelli, Claudio Ranieri and Jamie Vardy all have their moments in a day the Foxes will never, ever forget

There was a moment when Everton’s fans refused to go along in silent appreciation as Leicester’s perfect season found a rousing soundtrack.

They summoned the tribalism that makes football what it is to chant their team’s name as Andrea Bocelli began Nessun Dorma in the centre circle.

But taking on the world’s finest opera singer is a tough battle to win. Particularly when he has the mic and a voice that might have got the city’s university professors scanning their Richter scale device again.

Bocelli ramped up the volume to drown out the visitors and the party never stopped for Leicester’s fans.

‘We’re all going on a European tour, dilly ding dilly dong,’ was the first song to air from the stands.

It encapsulates Leicester.

You would not hear the traditional big teams joyously marking a season of air travel. Can you imagine if anyone tried that at Arsenal?

But for Leicester just that is hugely significant.

Using Claudio Ranieri’s delightful wake-up call catchphrase as the chorus fits the sense of wonder beautifully.

On four minutes, the cry went up: ‘We are staying up.’ They will never tire of that here.

Then: ‘Are you watching Nottingham?’ Even at this greatest point a little local crowing – with the 1977-78 season in mind – was irresistible.

Their national rivals got it too. ‘Tottenham Hotspur, we’re waiting for you,’ they sang. They may be waiting a while.

On 20 minutes there was a Mexican wave and from thereon a run through of the best numbers in the songbook. Steve Claridge, Iwan Thomas, and Esteban Cambiasso all got a mention.

As the goals went in the atmosphere swirled into something we might see at the Notting Hill Carnival.

Some fans stripped to the waist to unveil tattoos of the Premier League trophy, others bounced in the aisles, always there was a low hum of excited noise. Even the weather could not dampen spirits.

From glorious sunshine to thunderstorms in one afternoon, the fans used the shimmering blue and white flags that had been waved on the champions’ entrance as makeshift umbrellas.

No raining on this parade.

The carnival mood had started hours before, with supporters arriving at the King Power Stadium well ahead of kick-off to soak up this greatest day in their history.

The fan park was literally a funfair, dodgems, waltzers, and a 100-foot swing ride.

The queues for shirt-printing were hundreds deep – not many were being bought with small, medium and large sizes having gone within 24 hours of the launch on Friday – programmes sold out with a new print run already ordered.

More than 90 minutes before kick-off, Alan Birchenall, club ambassador and former player, began his 36th annual charity run round the pitch, soldiering through as the heavens opened.

He was joined for a lap by each of the players as they emerged for their warm-up.

They did another lap after the game. Premier League trophy in hand, smoke in the air, ribbons on the grass, fireworks dispelled.

Ranieri seemed to lose his glasses in the bedlam of silverware raising. He got probably the biggest cheer. Fans had dressed as pizzas, a Godfather banner hung in the terraces.

‘Barcelona, we’re coming for you.’
