Hillary and Bill Clinton stepped out onto the streets of Manhattan last night to a cacophony of cheers and claps as they enjoyed a date night in the city.

The ex-New York senator, and the 42nd US President, were all smiles as they waved to the gathering crowd outside the Shubert Theatre in New York, making their way inside to see the Broadway adaption of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.

And the fan-fare continued inside the auditorium too, where the pair were offered a standing ovation by the sold-out crowd as they shuffled to their seats.

Pregnant Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinksy later joined the pair for a fun night out with the whole family. 

The 38-year-old announced she was carrying baby number three last month but hid any signs of a bump with her back coat and large scarf.

'Marc and I have loved watching Charlotte be such a wonderful big sister and we're excited to watch Aidan become a big brother,' she tweeted. 'We cannot wait to meet our newest addition later this summer.'

Starring Jeff Daniels, the Clintons join a list long list of star-studded viewers of the box-office smash, including Jessica Chastain, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Samuel L Jackson.

The show eclipsed Broadway records at the beginning of the year, grossing a staggering $1.702 million in its second week of full performances.
