Southampton are calling for Newcastle’s January signings to be blocked from playing when the rescheduled fixture at St Mary’s takes place.

The Magpies were set to travel down south to face the Saints on January 2 but an outbreak of Covid-19 within the Toon camp forced the game to be postponed.

Newcastle have since added Kieran Trippier to their ranks and more arrivals are expected, with the club’s new mega-rich owners splashing the cash to help steer Eddie Howe’s side away from relegation.

talkSPORT report that Southampton are pushing the Premier League to act - a move that will infuriate Magpies supporters who are desperate to see their side’s new signings in action.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has questioned whether Newcastle should be allowed to field players who were not at the club when the original fixture was supposed to have taken place.

Ahead of the Saints’ FA Cup clash with Swansea, he said: "Newcastle could sign new players, we could also sign new players.

"We should discuss what happens with winter signings and if they are allowed to play.

"I'm not sure it is fair for them to play in games that have been postponed.”
