People caught vaping behind the wheel could lose their licence

The police are cracking down on the use of e-cigarettes in the driver's seat

Smoking and vaping laws

Police officers are warning drivers that they could be prosecuted if they vape and drive.

Although it's not currently illegal to smoke an e-cigarette behind the wheel, they are concerned about the thick vapour clouds that can obscure your vision while driving.

A charge for vaping behind the wheel is likely to come into effect soon, with penalties likely to include a ban from the roads in the most extreme cases, with other punishments including points on the licence, or fines of up to £2,500.

Speaking to the Metro, Sergeant Carl Knapp of the Sussex Roads Policing Unit warned that e-cigarettes could momentarily blind drivers, which in a worse case scenario could lead to a crash.

He said: "The smoke caused by vapes are a distraction and the consequences of them can be dire, all it takes is a moment to become distracted and potentially cause a crash and even worse, a fatality.

"There are no laws prohibiting vaping, however, you need to be in full and proper control of your vehicle at all times. If you are going to vape I advise that you open your windows and blow the vapour directly out, just ensure that you are in full control of your vehicle before doing so".

In a statement, road safety charity Brake supported these claims.

A spokesperson said: "Vaping while driving increases your risk of crashing, causing visual disruption and physical and mental distraction.
