Sean McDermott won his first game as Buffalo Bills head coach

In their victory over the New York Jets on Sunday, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined two former Bills coaches in winning his regular season debut with the team. One of them was fired less than two years into his tenure with the team and the other one has a spot on the shelf in Canton.

Rex Ryan was only the second head coach in Buffalo Bills history to win in his debut with the team. A 27-14 victory over the Indianapolis Colts who went to the AFC Championship the year prior had Bills fans everywhere fooled. After an 8-8 season and no playoffs, the expectations were sky-high for the Ryan-led Bills in 2016 and we all know how that ended.

The other coach to win in his debut is none other than Hall of Fame coach, Marv Levy. Levy took over during the 1986 season after the Bills fired Hank Bullough. Levy took over in Week 13 and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-12. He led the team to a 1-5 record after that game and the Bills decided to keep him as the coach for the future and it paid off. Even though Levy never won a Lombardi Trophy, reaching four straight Super Bowls is something that will live on forever and will likely never be done again.

McDermott has seemed to assemble a crew of coaches and front office members to ensure prolonged success for the franchise. Trusting the process has been the motto. A championship parade is long overdue for the city of Buffalo and McDermott will look to tackle that challenge in years to come.
