Review: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, Citizens Theatre, Glasgow

Review: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, Citizens Theatre, Glasgow A Night To Remember is the last production by the Citizens to be staged in the venue for the next two years as it undergoes a major refurbishment. It feels as though I'm never done raving about my beloved Citz, from my enthusiasm for their dedication to affordable theatre to their fantastic productions so I was sad to say goodbye.

Dressed in 1918 clothing the ensemble take to the stage to put on a performance. As they prepare to entertain themselves by telling stories of days gone by, they realise that they're not alone in the theatre. There's an audience. And they're alive. The ghosts of the Citizens Theatre were under the impression that they had the place to themselves for the next two years but unfortunately- they're a couple of weeks early!

The doors are locked as they prefer a 'captive' audience while they tell their haunting tale. Dorothy, a ghost from 1973 lived in the close next to the theatre and her father committed suicide by walking in front of a tram outside what was then known as the Princess's Theatre in 1918. Dorothy could never understand why he did it and she asked the ghosts who witnessed his death to tell her the true story.

The majority of the story is set around the First World War as Dorothy's two brothers sign up for the military. Not everyone in Glasgow is supportive of the war and the play highlights that it didn't necessarily bring communities together in the way that is remembered. There are also texts read out from 1918 and adverts that appeared in programmes at the theatre which is a wonderful and nostalgic touch.

I couldn't imagine a more fitting way to close the Citizens ahead of its refurb. A Night To Remember is a heartbreaking story, beautifully told and performed in a uniquely Glasgow fashion.

A Night To Remember runs at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow until Saturday 26th May.
