Wolves have been linked with Angers midfielder Batista Mendy. French outlet L’Equipe claim Julen Lopetegui’s side are one of three Premier League outfits interested in the 23-year-old who is entering the final season of his contract.

Their story says Wolves, Forest and Everton – all three of whom dodged relegation to the Championship – want to capitalise on the fact Angers were unable to win their own fight to stay in Ligue 1.

Indeed the Loire-based club endured a miserable campaign, taking just 18 points from 38 games and securing only four wins. As a result L’Equipe say Mendy ‘will probably not stay’ with them and even though they will want a fee of €6 million, suitors will try to strike an even better bargain.

Physically imposing Mendy came through the Nantes academy before signing a three year contract with Angers in the summer of 2021. He has also played up the age groups for the French national youth teams.

Mendy started all but three league games for Angers last season, having made 27 starts in his first campaign and if he leaves Angers he will do so having amassed 73 appearances in just two seasons. He has operated primarily as a defensive midfielder but can also play at the back.

Wolves are expected to experience some turnover in the middle of the park with extensive speculation about Ruben Neves’ future and the departure of Joao Moutinho. However, with the club mindful of finances, cut price deals such as one for Mendy could be attractive. They do, though, still have Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina.
