The 10 new countries that could be added to UK green list for foreign holidays

Ten new countries that could be added to UK green list for foreign holidays

A decision to move Portugal from the Government's green list to amber has sparked a furious reaction from the travel industry.

But more countries look likely to be added to the green list in the coming weeks because of their improving coronavirus infection rates and an increase in the number vaccinated.

Many senior figures claimed data shows destinations such as Malta should have been put on the green tier, and questioned why Portugal was not put on a "green watchlist" to highlight it was at risk of being switched.

Paul Charles, chief executive of travel consultancy The PC Agency, was among leading figures in the sector who expressed outrage when Portugal was moved to the amber list last week, as it meant no viable major tourist destination was in the green tier.

Portugal and other countries such as Malta, Morocco and Grenada should be on the green list but decisions on restrictions were "highly political, not based on data at all", Mr Charles claimed.

Here are 10 countries that look likely to join those on the green list in the coming weeks, according to the Mirror.

Malta is arguably the stand-out candidate for being added to the green list.

It currently has a case rate of just seven and three quarters of the population have been vaccinated.
