Driver sentenced for causing cyclist death in Essex

A man has been sentenced to two and half years in a young offenders institution after admitting causing death by dangerous driving in Essex.

Cyclist Nigel Garrett, 43, of Newington Avenue, Southend, died when he was hit by a speeding car in Lifstan Way, Southend, on 4 July 2009.

Last month William Nash, 20, of Seaview Drive, Great Wakering, admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court.

Nash has also been disqualified from driving for four years and will have to re-sit an extended driving test.

Senior investigating officer, Insp Dick Thomas, of Essex Police, said: "This investigation highlights the tragic consequences of drivers using excessive speed at any time of the day or night on the public roads.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Nigel Garrett, who died as a result of William Nash choosing to drive his car at excess speed within a residential area.

"We hope that the guilty plea and his sentencing will help family and friends of the victim feel that justice has been served."
