Fans could make their long awaited return to football stadiums next month, according to reports.

Matches in the Premier League and EFL have been played behind closed doors ever since football returned in June.

Plans had initially been in place to get supporters back in October but they had to be shelved amid a rise in coronavirus cases.

The Mail report that officials from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have submitted proposals to the Cabinet Office to allow some fans back after the national lockdown is lifted on December 2.

It is initially believed fans would only be allowed back in areas where coronavirus infection rates are low - areas in tiers one and two would be under consideration.

The government is said to have not made a decision on the return of supporters to stadiums, however.

Last month, a campaign to allow supporters back into stadiums was launched amid frustrations over spectators returning to other forms of entertainment.

The Royal Albert Hall hosted events while football supporters had even been allowed to watch matches on big screens at cinemas.

petition set up urging the government to let supporters return to stadiums has already attracted nearly 200,000 signatures.

All events in England were banned from November 5 when the second national lockdown came into force but elite sport was allowed to continue.
