The most expensive players in the Premier League who are not proving their worth including Wilshere, Martial and Benteke

These Premier League players may have arrived for big money on astronomical wages, but they are woefully out of form

The Premier League can be an extremely unforgiving environment for a footballer.

With the money and pressure that is thrust unto new signings nowadays there is very little room for error.

Cenk Tosun must be feeling the heat after a poor run of games

Arriving with a big price tag or with rumours of an astronomical weekly wage can lead to fans expectations reaching unrealistic levels

Before you know it, your new striker who was supposed to take your side to the next level is rotting on the bench and itching for a lucrative escape route to China.

Right now there are several players in the English top-flight who are perhaps nervously hovering over their agent's number with the January transfer window hurtling towards us.

Right now, these are (in this writer's humble opinion) the most out-of-form and overpaid in the Premier League.

Alexis Sanchez - Manchester United

Weekly Wage: £500,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £30M

Jose Mourinho must have thought he pulled off one of the best January transfer window deals of all time when he snapped up the Chilean from under rivals City's noses. However, the 29-year-old looks completely lost at Old Trafford and there seems no sign of his torrid time coming to an end.

Having not scored a Premier League goal since the end of March, questions will be asked by Red Devils fans as to how long it is before the former Barcelona man is shown the Old Trafford exit door.

Alvaro Morata - Chelsea

When Morata joined form Real Madrid last summer, Blues fans must have thought they would forget Diego Costa and his thuggish ways pretty quickly. But as it turns out, Chelsea fans must be praying in vain that the Brazilian-born striker makes a U-turn from Atletico Madrid and day now.

After a great start, the Spaniard has slipped woefully off the pace and seems more concerned with causing arguments on the pitch than scoring goals.

Christian Benteke - Crystal Palace

Weekly Wage: £120,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £32M

When Palace chief Steve Parish admitted the Belgium striker's lofty fee was 'madness', alarm bells in south London should have been ringing. The powerful striker was unplayable on his day at Aston Villa. Strong, quick and with fabulous technique, he ruined defences for fun.

Two goals from open play in his last 35 games suggest his lack of goals since singing from Liverpool is not so much a blip as a permanent drop in quality.

Jack Wilshere - West Ham United

Weekly Wage: £100,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: Free

Once seen as the successor to Paul Gascoigne as the creative hub in England's midfield, Wilshere's career has stagnated somewhat. His latest injury setback is unfortunate but, as Arsenal fans will tell you, not unexpected.

Looking two or three yards off the pace and getting bullied by opposition midfielders represents a drastic turn in fortunes for the England international. It speaks volumes that West Ham fans would be outraged if Manuel Pellegrini dropped Declan Rice (a 19-year-old centre-back) to accommodate the boyhood Hammers fan.

Cenk Tosun - Everton

Weekly Wage: £145,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £27M

After being brought in by former Toffees boss Sam Allardyce in January, Marco Silva seemed to through his support behind the Turkey international by not buying a new striker. However, just five goals in the league suggest Farhad Moshiri will have to open his chequebook in the New Year.

Tosun was culpable of missing several gilt-edged chances against West Ham United at crucial points of the game. With a defence as frail as the Toffees', missing key chances could prove fatal come the end of the season.

Manolo Gabbiadini - Southampton

Weekly Wage: £80,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £15M

When the Italian international arrived at St Mary's he could not stop scoring. As if for fun, the former Napoli man would pop up in the box at will to score for the Saints.

But since the start of last season, goals have been few and far between and, although he scored the goal against Swansea City which effectively kept them up, Saints fans will be wanting more. Danny Ings and Charlie Austin cannot be relied upon for the entire season so Mark Hughes will need his main man to turn up soon.

Anthony Martial - Manchester United

Weekly Wage: £75,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £58M

As mentioned above, the Premier League is perhaps the most unforgiving in the world. Martial fans will argue the winger i not given enough time to impress so is forced to try too hard when he is given a chance. But the stats don't lie.

Against Derby County on Tuesday the forward showed glimpses of his best but his rampant first season at Old Trafford feels like an awfully long time ago. If he wants to claim a place for good, the France international will have to show a thoughtless streak to oust equally mis-firing teammate Alexis Sanchez.

Mesut Ozil - Arsenal

Weekly wage: £350,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £42.5M

When Ozil is in form, he is a joy to watch and rightfully earns praise from pundits across the across the country. But when he is not it is a completely different story.

Unlike Sanchez, the World Cup winner resisted the urge to seek pastures new and signed a new, lucrative deal with the Gunners. Since then the pressure has been turned up and the shirt number is different, but it is still the same inconsistent player who trudges mournfully across the Emirates turf.

Harry Maguire - Leicester City

Weekly Wage: £85,000-a-week, Transfer Fee: £17M

Perhaps he has had his head turned since rejecting Manchester United in the summer, but 'Slabhead' looks a completley different prospect to the player who lit up the World Cup for England.

Against Bournemouth he struggled with the pace and pressing of Callum Wilson, Joshua King and Ryan Fraser and was lucky not to be sent off. Needs to get back to his marauding best for the Foxes ASAP.
