Gangs Of London Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

At the beginning of the episode, Finn (Colm Meaney) and Marian Wallace (Michelle Fairley) take their kids out into the woods. Once there, they force a teenager Sean (Thomas Simpson) to shoot and kill a man who is buried up to his neck in dirt. This is how Sean becomes a member of the Wallace gang. Sean struggles but eventually shoots the man when the bucket conceals his face. Then, we jump over to Turkey where a bunch of cows are blown up. Heavily armed people storm the trailer before interrogating the Turkish truck driver (Serhat Metin). He is told to drive to the next checkpoint and make the hand over as usual while drugs are stolen from the vehicle. Back in Kent, England, men learn that the drugs have gone missing from the cows.

Lale (Narges Rashidi) and Hekar (Askel Ustun) watch as the drugs are retrieved from the nearby water. Lale tells Hekar that the drought is over and he replies that the war has begun. She isn’t worried about Sean because he is too distracted to notice London slipping from his grip. Sean arrives at the apartment only to find that Jack (Emmett J Scanlan) is dead in what appears to be a suicide. Elliot Finch (Sope Dirisu) hits the heavy bag before attending a counseling session with Dr. May (Alexia Traverse-Healy). During that session, Vicky (Jing Lusi) pleads with DCI John Harks (Garry Cooper) to let Elliot stay on the investigation and he eventually agrees with her. She tells Elliot about it after that and he says he felt the shift. They know Sean threw that kid off of the building but Vicky says they need connections to the shell companies and asset funds to bring down the Wallace corporation.

Elliot gets a call and he goes to Jack’s place where he learns about his death. Sean asks him about it and he admits he doesn’t think it is a suicide. Sean says there is a lot of havoc being done on Elliot’s word. As Elliot prepares to leave, he notices something odd in the kitchen. Next, Asif Afridi (Asif Raza Mir) goes to a meeting where Nasir (Parth Thakerar) speaks to a small ground. He is asked about heroin being imported from Pakistan and he talks about he will try to stop it when he is Mayor of London. When the meeting ends, Asif tells his son about the shipment of cows that were slaughtered. Nasir doesn’t want to be part of it but Asif reminds him that the money from drugs helps fund his campaign. Next, Alexander (Paapa Essiedu) tells Sean that whoever killed Finn is trying to tidy up.

They chat about Patrick Day and his car being found outside of a warehouse with three bodies inside. They’re also moving on the Kinney thing with help from uniform officers. Then, they chat about Alex allowing Asif to trade but Sean doesn’t trust him. Asif tells Ed (Lucian Msamati) and Marian about his cows and never having a problem with them for more than 30 years. Ed tells him that they’re in an adjustment people because Sean is running things now. Asif speaks with Sean alone. Sean makes it clear that he doesn’t want anyone trading and that it makes him look suspicious that he isn’t following that order. Asif says he would wipe out their blood line if they killed his son but he wouldn’t lose money doing it. Sean reminds him that Nasir won’t have a chance to win the election without help from his gang.

Before Asif leaves, he tells Sean that what is bad for him is bad for Sean as well. Then, Sean speaks with Billy (Brian Vernel) and his mother about the harm it is doing to their family. Billy offers to help but Sean says there is nothing he can do. Billy leaves and Sean tells his mother that he is going to make things right. She says Billy is clean and Sean is strong. Vicky visits a woman and leaves her card. After that, Luan (Orli Shuka) goes shopping for a cake for his daughter before sitting down with Ed. Luan tries to clear his name. Then, he tells Ed that he knows about Finn’s secret and he hands him an envelope. He says he has done his part and he wants the Wallace Organization to live up to their end of the bargain. When Luan leaves, Ed looks through the envelope and finds a handful of pictures. We can’t see them but they seem to upset Ed.

After that, Hekar and Lale give drugs to a dealer and tell him to only deal with trusted customers. He leaves and Lale tells Hekar that Asif is the only safe route in right now. Next, Asif interrogates his workers hoping to find out who screwed him over. He kills two people and neither man says anything. Billy attends an orgy and finds out that one of his friends has found drugs. Nick passes out before he can tell Billy where he got them. Sean joins Ed and Elliot and they discuss their current situation. Alex tells Sean that they need money and they trust Afridis so they allowed Asif to continue dealing drugs. A bit later, Kinney Edwards (Mark Lewis Jones) enters and Sean pulls out a gun. Kinney sits down and tells Sean about his son killing Finn. He gives Sean the phone that was used to take the job.

Kinney isn’t willing to give up his son but Alex and the others believe they’ll get him either way. Kinney explains that killing Darren won’t change anything. When Kinney leaves, Sean says they’ll find out who ordered the hit and get Kinney’s son today. Mark (Adrian Bower) tells Elliot he has a job for him. He calls his partner and tells her about the news before running into a woman with coffee. He goes to the job location and finds out that he is supposed to drive Shannon (Pippa Bennett-Warner) around. She helps him clean his shirt. Meanwhile, Sean tries to find out where Billy went. Dylan confesses that Billy went to score gear and he suggests checking Green Lanes. Billy sets out to find Lale’s dealer while Sean tries to find his brother.

He learns that the messages on the phone are encrypted and it is going to be tough to decrypt them. Elliot flirts with Shannon until Sean calls and asks him to find Billy. During this time, Billy pleads with the dealer to sell him a bag. Some guy confronts Alex wanting to know how he hides everything the Wallace Organization does. They go back and forth until Sean enters and tells Alex that they’re going to move on Darren tonight. Alex is wasted and wants to protect the business so he tells Sean that this isn’t a good idea. Sean ends up leaving without him. Billy convinces the dealer to sell him one bag but Hekar finds out and he isn’t happy. Elliot arrives in time to stop Billy from getting beat up but Billy ends up stealing his car. Then, Hekar calls Lale to tell her that Sean knows now.

Sean returns home and finds his mother dressed up. She says it is a night for celebration since they found the Kinney campsite and she encourages him to act without hesitation. Ed doesn’t like going in this way and he tells Marian about it. Ed agrees to go with them until Billy arrives and tells Sean to come with him. Billy tells Sean where he got the drugs. Billy says he did it because he wanted to do something to help. Sean says he should’ve stayed away from this stuff. In a flashback, we see that Billy bought and killed the man. It wasn’t Sean at all. In the present, Sean tells Billy he has to do this himself. Billy stays at home and gets angry while Elliot wanders the streets. Kinney hangs out at his campsite until the gang shows up and starts shooting people.

Kinney punches a hole through the ground and tries to escape underneath his camper. Kinney cuts the hose on a canister and sends it flying. Marian watches from her vehicle and Kinney crawls to safety.

Gangs Of London Review

I guess some people are going to love Gangs of London because it is chaotic and gory. For me, I really can’t get into the story. I think it has too many characters and I find it difficult to keep up with them all. It is very gory though. The producers have worked hard to find unique, shocking ways to kill people. It just isn’t for me. I would prefer something a little more realistic and I see why some will enjoy it though. I’ll likely keep watching it until I finish the season for the sake of recapping it here but the show really isn’t for me.

  1. James says:

Too bad you didn’t finish because it was a pretty amazing program overall. One thing we have to take into account is this was a Sky Atlantic program and not BBC or ITV. Like Fortitude before it, Gangs of London is not typical and yes, can be ultra violent. In the end it was a great series and definitely left open for a second series. Can’t wait.
