Ben Davies pulled from Wales squad due to “significant” injury

The international break isn’t going to be especially restful for a lot of Tottenham Hotspur players, but at least one is returning to London, though apparently not under the best of circumstances. According to the BBC, Ben Davies has withdrawn from the Wales international squad and returned to Tottenham due to injury.

The report doesn’t state the nature of the injury or what happened, but Wales assistant manager said that the injuries to Davies (and Luton Town defender Tom Lockyear, who also withdrew) as “significant” and implied that they picked them up playing for their clubs.

Now, is this the case, or is Davies simply knackered after an extended match schedule along with the rest of Spurs’ squad? It’s unclear. We have no reason do doubt this report, certainly. On the other hand, he did play 33 minutes for Spurs on Sunday against Aston Villa as a replacement for Sergio Reguilon, who was withdrawn after picking up a knock of his own. So if there is an injury here and not just “internationalitis” then it must have happened pretty recently.

I’m not going to complain about any Tottenham Hotspur player missing the next two weeks of international duty for any reason, whether a legitimate injury or just, y’know, because they need a breather. If Ben Davies needs some time to heal, then he should get that time. The other bit of good news, if you can call it that, is that thanks to Tottenham crashing out of the Europa League they’re no longer going to be playing two matches a week until infinity, so there’s additional time for rest and recuperation in between matches. That’s almost certainly a good for everyone going forward, including the players at left back.
