Jennifer Aniston, husband Justin Theroux announce separation

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston were married in 2015. This is a photo of the pair from the 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have split up.

The Hollywood couple announced their separation Thursday in a joint statement that Aniston's representative, Stephen Huvane, shared with USA TODAY.

"This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship," the statement reads. "Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another."

Aniston, 49, and Theroux, 46, were privately wed in August 2015. The two began dating after shooting their 2012 comedy, Wanderlust, and were engaged in August 2012. Aniston was previously married to Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005.

Why come out with a statement on their breakup, after being so coy about their union? Aniston and Theroux explain.

"Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly," their joint statement reads. "Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative."
