Korean dramas are often ahjussi-sonyeo romances – known in English as May-to-December romances – when an older man falls in love with a much younger woman. Here’s a list of our favourite ahjussi-sonyeo dramas, starring familiar faces such as Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin and other ahjussi heartthrobs.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God – Goblin (2016)

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (known as Goblin) tells the story of a war general turned immortal deity (a goblin). The immortal soon discovers that his longevity is a curse as he watches his loved ones die by his side. The lonesome goblin (played by Gong Yoo) is now 939 years old but appears to be a handsome 37-year-old man. His only hope for death is his long-awaited bride, a bubbly 19-year-old high school senior Ji Eun-tak, portrayed by Kim Go-eun.

Korea’s ‘Queen of Melodrama’: Crash Landing on You star Son Ye-jin

This isn’t the actress’ first ahjussi-sonyeo love story. She debuted as the lead character, a 17-year-old student in the controversial film A Muse – in which the student captures the heart of a 70-year-old man.

Goblin is a magical story filled with enchanting prose, a heartwarming soundtrack and significant supporting characters.

Prime Minister & I (2013)

Yoona plays 28-year-old Nam Da-jung, a tabloid reporter who supports her ailing father. Unfortunately, Da-jung isn’t very good at her job and often misses out on sensational scoops. In search of the next big exposé, Da-jung stalks South Korea’s youngest prime minister, 42-year-old Kwon Yul (Lee Beom-soo).

As Da-jung interviews Kwon Yul in an attempt to expose him, the pair get caught in a public scandal and are forced into a contract marriage. Viewers can expect a heartwarming storyline and lots of laughter from this romcom.

Memories of the Alhambra (2018)

Memories of the Alhambra celebrates Hyun Bin’s return to television as the award-winning actor plays Yoo Jin-woo, a 39-year-old CEO turned gamer. The CEO travels to Alhambra, Spain, in an attempt to meet the creator of his favourite augmented reality game.

Jin-woo meets 27-year-old Jung Hee-joo (Park Shin-hye), a classical guitarist who works part-time jobs and runs a hostel to pay her bills. Despite the hostel’s run-down condition, Jin-woo stays there because it is where the game’s creator lived before he mysteriously vanished.

Memories of the Alhambra is a gorgeous series set within the grand architecture of Spain, with mesmerising augmented reality graphics and a sizzling love story.

Mr. Sunshine (2018)

Mr. Sunshine begins with a young boy who escapes slavery in Joseon only to board an American warship during the 1871 Shinmiyangyo (US expedition to Korea).

Years later, Eugene Choi (Lee Byung-hun) would return to Joseon as captain of the United States Marine Corps. He meets an aristocrat’s daughter and trained sniper, Go Ae-shin (Kim Tae-ri) and falls in love with her as he uncovers a plot by foreigners to overthrow Korea.

Lee Byung-hun won the award for Best Actor at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards for his role as Eugene Choi. If you’re fond of historical dramas, you’ll like Mr. Sunshine – it’s heartbreaking.

My Mister (2018)

My Mister unfolds a love story between a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s. The main couple’s significant age gap caused a bit of controversy for the drama before it was even released.

In this series, Lee Ji-an (played by IU) is tasked by her boss to find out the weaknesses of engineer Park Dong-hoon (Lee Sun-kyun) and get him fired. However, as Ji-an finds out more about the quiet Dong-hoon, she begins to fall for his kind personality.

IU almost declined the role due to the controversy. After reading the script and consulting director Kim Won-seok, the actress decided the series was not a typical ahjussi-sonyeo romance. In a press conference for My Mister, she said it was a “human story”.

Viewers can expect heart-wrenching, realistic scenes of pain, hope and love as Lee Ji-an and Park Dong-hoon grow fond of each other.
