Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke had some strong words for Rangers striker Jermain Defoe.
Andy Walker has pulled no punches by labelling Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke as ‘pathetic’ after he called for Rangers striker Jermain Defoe to be banned for ‘diving’.
As reported by BBC Sport, Gers boss Steven Gerrard expressed his disappointment at Clarke’s comments, who wanted ‘consistency’ after his player Jordan Jones received a two-match ban in October for diving.
Clarke was referring to Rangers’ 4-0 win over St Mirren at the weekend [BBC Sport], where Bournemouth loanee Defoe was awarded a spot-kick by the referee, particularly the challenge by Paul McGinn
Former Celtic man Walker waded in on the feud as he made his thoughts pretty clear on the matter as he dubbed the Scottish referring system as ‘wrong’.
“I think it is pathetic of any manager to want to get anyone else banned for two games,” Walker told Sky Sports News on 05/02/2019 at 3:15 pm. “I understand he was upset when his player Jordan Jones was banned.
“In all honesty, my view is that it is a ridiculous system that we are looking at here. If the referee spots an act of simulation during the game, he gives a yellow card.
“But if he doesn’t see then you’re liable for a two-game ban. It doesn’t make sense – they system we have up here is completely wrong.”
During the clash at Ibrox over the weekend, the Gers scored three of the penalties which were awarded to them, two of which came off the boot of James Tavernier and the other Defoe – Ryan Kent netted his side’s fourth goal from open play.
Nonetheless, that result helped Gerrard’s side remain second in the Scottish Premiership table on 48 points, two points ahead of third-placed Aberdeen and three points ahead of fourth-placed Killie.
Since moving to Scotland on loan from English Premier League side Bournemouth, Defoe has played three games for the Glasgow club, finding the back of the net on two occasions, according to transfermarkt.
Defoe and his teammates face a tough Premiership test at Aberdeen on Wednesday night, with the away side having the chance to open up a five-point lead on the Dons.
