Celtic reportedly wanted Anderlecht midfielder Adrien Trebel this summer.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Celtic were one of the clubs interested in signing Anderlecht midfielder Adrien Trebel this summer.
The Bhoys endured a difficult summer transfer window, as manager Brendan Rodgers was unable to sign a host of his targets, and saw Moussa Dembele leave late in the transfer window.
John McGinn was one talent Celtic missed out on, prompting the Bhoys to land Youssouf Mulumbu on a free transfer instead, but it seems that Celtic missed out on another midfielder too.
Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws report that Celtic wanted to land Anderlecht’s Adrien Trebel, with Porto and Hertha Berlin also interested, whilst Anderlecht snubbed €8million (£7.2million) offers.
The 27-year-old joined Anderlecht from Standard Liege in January 2017, and has been a key player ever since, with the Frenchman even featuring against Celtic in the Champions League group stage last season.
With that in mind, it’s worth noting that Trebel was actually praised on Celtic’s official website last year, with Tony Watt – a former Celtic striker who played alongside Trebel at Standard Liege – offering his view.
Watt hailed Trebel as being tenacious midfielder and a ‘very good player’, making comments which may just have tipped Celtic off about the former Nantes star’s talents.
Yet with £7.2million rejected, Celtic may not have a realistic shot to land Trebel in 2019, as a major fee would no doubt be required to prise him away from Anderlecht.
