Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has claimed that he was played out of position at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Iceland international joined Spurs from German club Hoffenheim in the summer of 2012 and was expected to work wonders at White Hart Lane.
However, the 25-year-old struggled to play regularly first under Andre Villas-Boas and then under Tim Sherwood, and was eventually let go in the summer transfer window.
Now flourishing at Swansea for whom he has scored two goals and created 39 chances in 15 Premier League appearances so far this season, Sigurdsson has said that he did not succeed at Spurs because he was played out of position.
“It was a frustrating time,” The Sun quotes the attacking midfielder as saying. “I wanted to play more football and I wanted to play in my best position.
“I played a lot on the wing but I am not a Jefferson Montero type, a quick little winger. I did it for a few months but it wasn’t where I wanted to play.
“Tim did play me down the middle a bit more which was good. And it was great playing alongside the likes of Gareth Bale.”
Swansea manager Garry Monk has made Sigurdsson his creator-in-chief, and the former Reading star has gelled.
With the Swans hosting Tottenham at the Liberty Stadium in the Premier League later today, Sigurdsson could prove to be the decisive player.
