I've seen a lot of people dealing with this problem so I'll post it on here so everyone can see.

For everyone that is experiencing their battery to drain while idling here is a video that shows how to solve that problem.

https://youtu.be/M14CWF5gnT8

The way to solve it starts at 2:20 if you want to skip the beginning part.

Hope that helps :)

Ok, I completely disagree. I keep high accuracy location on always, I have Android Device Manager as a device administrator, plus 4 other apps, I also have TWO phones on Google location and have that turned on. This is my normal battery. You can see my idle drain is almost 12 hours and it is very little. When I have checked GSam my idle drain has been between 0.4% to 1% almost always.

While this may have fixed his idle drain, I think there were other issues involved.

Kelly I can appreciate all your posts on battery drain and you no doubt get great battery life.

However, I noticed immediate increases in battery life when I went to power saving mode on location.

I like Google Now and use it. But when I keep my location on his accuracy it drains may battery almost 15-20% faster than when I go into power saving mode.

I've tried replicating your use with what you posted using Package disabler. Didn't change anything for me

I am heavy user with email, texting, browsing, reading WSJ and some Facebook via the browser only.

I still get 12-14 hours so satisfied but these ridiculous 20+ hours just means it's a different type of use and apps that don't work as hard.

That is a whole different thing. This is about idle drain, which is what I was addressing.

Also the two things he did should have little effect, if any, on idle drain.

It only has an affect if you have a malfunctioning app. Like one that keeps gps running a lot.

Where can I find the idle drain on gsam?

Again Kelly the numbers are mythical. If you aren't using the phone for that long of course you're getting 22 hours. Like I posted before I got 18+ hours when letting my phone sit idle overnight and using it all day.

I got 12 hours when plugging in all night and using it off charger during the day.

When I was set to high accuracy using my phone during the day my battery drain was taking away an additional 10-12% then when in low power state.

When I left it at high power on weekend after not switching from using high for Google Maps, it had hardly any effect (when not using it that much)

I feel this solution only hides the problem as I'm sure there are many who don't have this drainage issue with it on. By turning it off, you'll never figure out whats really causing the drainage.

I feel a smartphone should be able to do everything a smartphone does at all times which includes having the location on. I have blue tooth and location on all day and I get normal battery drain.

I know this is an old post, but just came across this while looking for a solution to battery drain as a result of idle processes on my s6. It's bad when it's using up more battery than the screen.

Anyhow, I have a lot of apps on my phone I don't use on a regular basis. The thing is, I don't feel I should have to factory reset my phone because I'll probably reload the same apps. Moreover, I don't change much on my phone. The only thing that does change are the app and OS updates.

I may load a new app from time to time for some, spare of the moment, but minor convenience.

I agree with this post because if one were to take a step back and try to recollect the last time the phone seemed to function normally, you may be able to figure out which app was last loaded. From there, u can check the app(s) permissions and change accordingly or, remove the app all together.

One way to determine which app is causing issues with battery drain is to remove the app entirely or, turn it's permissions off entirely. Start with apps that are not used on a regular basis; ones that have zero significance in everyday interactions with the phone.

By the end of the day or following day, it should be enough time to determine if it had any impact. Depending on the outcome, remove or change permissions for additional apps until there is a noticeable difference. Then reapply them back, one at a time to figure out the culperit.

Ultimately, this process will be a bit of a trial and error process.

When I read this post, I realized that some apps probably have more permissions than they should. So i started to turn off permissions and delete apps I use less frequently or don't use at all. Funny enough, things got better.

In short, the onus is on me to do some house cleaning every once in a while.

Cheers,
Bob

I posted this in the Note 8 battery drain by mistake, searching for answers.

I've noticed unusual overnight drain the last week or so. Normally cell standby is at the top of the list (around 3%) in usage section. Lately it's Android OS and Device Idle. Starting to search online everywhere else for ideas. Hope I find a solution somewhere.

I uninstalled two apps and battery drain is back to normal! One I had installed in the last week was an icon pack called Viral. The other was Fitbit because I don't use that app anymore. Not sure which was the culprit but I'm guessing the icon pack. I've had Fitbit installed for 8-9 months.

I agree with most of the users here.
The information in the video doesn't really solve the problem. It just removes a lot more and somewhere in between the problem is also gone.

My Galaxy S6 also had good battery life before and then at a certain moment Android OS and Device Idle started to take 40% of my total power consumption... way too high, especially if you know that I'm a user who uses other apps regularly and they are way below the consumption of the Android OS and Device Idle.

I hope someone knows a good program to find the real problem behind the battery drain, a really detailed battery/power overview. The best I found till now was Gsam, but it is not specific enough to get to the bottom of this unfortunately.

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Close all your apps before you sleep. Especially Youtube and Chrome. Go to Settings and search for Location. Change the Location method to Battery Saving.

Galaxy Note 5 here and the Administrative options shown in the video dont exist currently.

Simple System Monitor is available in the Play Store which is how I found that those apps were still running all night long.

Swiping from the top youll find Power saving but I cant tell a difference with that on.
