Report: Tottenham Hotspur interested in Valencia’s Joao Cancelo

Valencia defender Joao Cancelo has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Joao Cancelo from Valencia in the summer transfer window, according to Tuttomercatoweb.com and Calciomercato.com.

Both the Italian news outlets have credited Tottenham with interest in the right-back, with Tuttomercatoweb.com claiming that Valencia want as much as €25 million (£21.9m) as transfer fees in order to part company with the right-back.

The Portugal international is one of the most talented and promising young right-backs in Europe and has been on the books of Valencia on a permanent basis since the summer of 2015 following a season-long loan spell at the Spanish club.

Tottenham need to sign a right-back following Kyle Walker’s recent departure to Premier League rivals City for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £54 million.

Cancelo worked with Manchester United legend Gary Neville during the former England international defender’s short spell as head coach at Valencia from December 2015 until March 2016.

According to FourFourTwo, Neville has privately suggested that the Portuguese would be the ideal long-term replacement for Barcelona’s Daniel Alves.

That is some praise indeed, as Alves is one of the greatest right-backs of all time and remains one of the best in the world despite being 34 years of age.
